Seongsu: design in the fabric of the neighborhood
Seongsu’s former industrial buildings, workshops and contemporary retail spaces make it an interesting place to observe how a district changes. The official Seoul travel guide’s August 2026 Seongsu feature documents its mixture of factory heritage, cafés, creative spaces and temporary pop-ups.
Choose a handful of current destinations rather than following an old list of stores. Working buildings deserve the same respect as any other neighborhood. A design-focused walk is more rewarding when you notice materials, reuse and street life rather than treating every surface as a backdrop.
MMCA Seoul and SeMA are different institutions
The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art has several branches. The MMCA Seoul visitor page is the appropriate source for the Seoul location, exhibitions, tickets and accessibility. It currently lists programs including a Do Ho Suh exhibition running from August 2026 into 2027, but exhibition availability and booking arrangements must be checked for the intended date. A museum's general opening hours do not guarantee entry to a particular timed exhibition.
The Seoul Museum of Art is a municipal network. Its Seosomun main-branch page identifies the City Hall-area location, directions, accessible facilities and exhibitions. Other SeMA branches are not necessarily in the same building or neighborhood. If an exhibition is at a different branch, plan the journey to that location instead of arriving at Seosomun by habit.

A route that allows art to be more than a checklist
A historic-center art day can begin with one exhibition at MMCA Seoul, then continue into Samcheong-dong or Anguk for a meal or smaller gallery. If you are more interested in municipal art, SeMA Seosomun and the surrounding Jeong-dong streets form a different central cluster. Choose the exhibition first; do not assume that combining two institutions is always better than spending adequate time at one.
A design-oriented day in Seongsu can combine Seoul Forest, architecture, independent shops and a gallery or creative space. The official Seongsu guide provides district context, but temporary retail and exhibition spaces change frequently. Verify the precise location and operating dates before treating a social-media post as a current recommendation.
Access, language and exhibition rules
Check whether an exhibition offers English interpretation, an audio guide, subtitles or a guided tour. If you need step-free access, inspect the branch’s accessibility information and contact the institution about any uncertainty. A building may have accessible facilities while a temporary installation has separate restrictions. Photography rules can also differ between exhibitions, so follow the instructions for the actual show.
Many museums offer spaces for rest, but do not assume that every exhibition permits large bags, food or unrestricted photography. A well-planned museum day includes time for the work itself rather than only for reaching the next address.
A dated exhibition example, not a permanent recommendation
As of 8 September 2026, the MMCA Seoul listing includes Do Ho Suh (27 August 2026–9 February 2027) and other current exhibitions. This is a useful example of how to select a program based on a specific artist rather than a generic “best museums” list. The dates and ticket notices belong to the institution and may change. Before publishing a future recommendation, the editorial team should recheck the current exhibition page rather than simply updating the year in the title.
